The 4Cs of Diamonds Explained ~ A Guide to Diamond Quality

The 4Cs of Diamonds

Buying a diamond is an act of intention. Understanding what makes one diamond different from another helps you choose with confidence and ensures the piece you invest in is exactly what you expect it to be.

Every diamond is assessed against four universal criteria, known as the 4Cs. Together they tell the complete story of a diamond's quality, character, and beauty.

Cut

Cut is the most important of the four. It refers not to the shape of the diamond  round, oval, pear  but to the quality of its proportions, angles, facets, and finishing. A well-cut diamond interacts with light precisely reflecting it back through the top of the stone in a way that creates brilliance, fire, and scintillation. A poorly cut diamond, regardless of its colour or clarity, will appear dull.

At Carol Cole Jewellery, cut quality is never compromised. The diamonds sourced through our Hatton Garden dealers are selected for their ability to hold and return light.

Colour

Diamond colour is graded on a scale from D to Z  - D being completely colourless, Z carrying a visible yellow or brown tint. The closer to D the rarer and more valuable the stone.

Colourless and near-colourless diamonds graded D through J are the standard for fine jewellery. In yellow gold settings, a slight warmth in a diamond's colour is often imperceptible and can even complement the warmth of the metal beautifully.

Clarity

Clarity describes the presence of natural internal characteristics  known as inclusions and surface irregularities known as blemishes. These occur naturally during a diamond's formation and are what make every stone unique.

Clarity is graded from Flawless (FL) no inclusions visible even under 10x magnification down to Included (I), where inclusions are visible to the naked eye.

The VS (Very Slightly Included) and SI (Slightly Included) grades used across Carol Cole Jewellery collections represent exceptional value and beauty inclusions at these grades are invisible to the naked eye, meaning your diamond appears perfectly clean in all light conditions.

Carat

Carat is a measure of a diamond's weight, not its size, though the two are related. One carat equals 0.2 grams. As carat weight increases, so does rarity and value, larger diamonds occur less frequently in nature.

It is worth noting that two diamonds of identical carat weight can appear very different in size depending on their cut. A well-cut 0.5ct diamond will often appear larger and more brilliant than a poorly cut 0.7ct stone.

How the 4Cs Work Together

The 4Cs do not exist in isolation they interact. A diamond's ability to reflect light depends primarily on cut, but colour and clarity play their part too. The carat weight affects perceived size, but cut determines how that weight is distributed across the stone.

Understanding the 4Cs allows you to make an informed choice, knowing exactly what you are looking for and why. If you have questions about the diamonds in any Carol Cole piece, or would like guidance on selecting a stone for a bespoke commission, Carol is happy to help.
